She was relieved she wasn’t in the wedding party. She felt sure she would break had she been. Tammy and Ronald decided on a family only wedding party so as to not upset their friends.
Thinking of their friends made Emily’s thoughts turn to Tray, Ronald’s best-bud. Surely he would be there. How would she be able to face him? He would have heard by now why Jason, her ex-finance, broke off the engagement. After all, they lived in a small town, and it seems those who live in small towns always seem to know everyone else’s business.
Jason told Emily he couldn’t marry her due to her unresolved feelings for Tray. And Emily in turn told Tammy his reasoning. Somehow she knew in her heart Tray would find out and as such made a point of not being anywhere he was.
Unresolved feelings! She and Tray never had a relationship so how could there be any unresolved feelings? They’d known each other for over three years now and not once did he flirt with her. In fact, if one had to describe their relationship she’d say he acted more like her older brother.
Today however she wouldn’t be able to get around running into him. She could however avoid him like the plague.
Just then her phone rang and Emily was forced to come out of her so called day dream. Emily answered the phone in a fake chipper voice, “Good morning Mrs. Almost Kelley. What can I do for you?”
“Oh Em, I’m so glad I caught you at home! Can you believe in all of my running around I forgot to pick up the cake from the baker and I can’t find anyone to run the errand for me. I do hope you can?”
“Sure Tam, I’ll pick it up on my way to the church this afternoon.”
“Oh no, that’ll be too late. The baker said he’s only open until noon. Something about some family affair and he’s closing early.”
A quick glance at the clock told Emily she’d only have fifteen minutes. Her friend was in quite a pickle and so she agreed to run the errand.
Emily hung up the phone grabbed her car keys and ran for her front door. A quick glance in the mirror reminded her she hadn’t showered yet, let alone brushed her hair. She quickly grabbed an elastic from her change tray and pulled her long brown hair back into a ponytail.
Arriving five minutes to noon she flew through the door of Angelo’s Bakery and announced she was there to pick up the Kelley wedding cake.
“The Kelley cake was picked up yesterday.” The sole clerk responded.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure it was but let me double check.”
While the clerk scanned the order book the door to the bakery swung open. “I’m glad you’re still open. The Kelley’s sent me to pick up their wedding cake!”
Emily swung around to see who had spoken the same words she herself had said only moments before to find Tray.
“Tray, what are you doing here?”
“Ronald sent me over. He said he forgot to pick up the cake and if Tammy found out she would never let him forget it.”
Emily starred blankly at Tray and then responded. “Tray, Tammy sent me here to pick up the cake. I think there must have been a mix up.”
The clerk interrupted the two, “The bride and the groom where here yesterday to pick up the cake and to drop this off.” She handed them a large, heavy brown package and told them they were to open the package together.
They did as they were instructed uncovering a mirror with a note stuck to it. “Sometimes other’s see what we may not… you are in love with one another- see for yourself.”
Later at the reception Emily whispered into the ear of the new Mrs. Kelley, “You sneaky little bride, match making and on your own wedding day!”
“Well, did it work?”
“He did ask me to be his date and so far it’s been great. I guess we’ll take it from here.”
