My first clue that something was up was the way that my fiancé came in the front door and ducked into the storage room right away. He didn’t even say hi to me. I stared at the closed door, mildly suspicious, and then puttered around the kitchen until he emerged, buttoning his suit jacket.

“You have to change,” he said, looking at my jeans and T-shirt. I’d just gotten home from work and changed into that outfit, so I asked why I had to change again. We were only meeting our deacon for dinner at Tony Roma’s to discuss wedding details.

“Wear something nicer than that,” he insisted, and this time I caught the twinkle in his eye. He denied my allegations that he had anything up his sleeve, and I decided to play along until I could gather more clues. I rifled through my closet, trying to decide what to wear – a hard thing to do when I didn’t know what was going on. He chose a skirt and blouse for me. My curiosity was deepening, but the mystery wouldn’t be solved by asking him questions, so I didn’t.

He held the door of his truck for me and we drove away to meet Andrew. He warned me that Andrew had studying to do, so when he told me it was time to go we would have to go. I agreed, filing away this clue that whatever he had planned was happening at a certain time. He also provided the information that we would be having “naked time” later. Knowing his word plays, I knew that wasn’t what it sounded like, and so I also filed that to see what he really meant by it.

We arrived at the restaurant early and I hopped out of the truck, then had to wait a few seconds for him. Andrew soon joined us, and we went over our plans for the wedding ceremony. After dinner, my fiancé indicated that we had to run, and told Andrew that he’d told me we would be having naked time later. I was shocked that he was repeating such jokes to a deacon, but he added, “It’s nothing immoral, but there will be bare-naked ladies there.”

I went away to the washrooms smiling to myself. I had figured out the mystery. There was a Barenaked Ladies concert in town, and my fiancé had gotten us tickets. I walked with him out to the truck and discovered a card on the seat. Tucked inside Valentine’s day wishes were two tickets to the concert. In a few minutes, we were part of the crowd fighting our way towards the stadium.

A Tomi Swick poster was plastered to every door. “We should check that out,” I said, motioning to the concert as the crowd swept us inside the doors. My fiancé had played Swick’s song “Night Like This” right before he proposed, and we were planning to use that for our first dance song at the wedding. We discussed it as we found our seats and sat down. In a few minutes, the lights darkened and the announcer came out on stage. As he did so, Tomi Swick’s name began playing across the bottom of the huge screens.

I looked at my fiancé. “Tomi Swick is the opening act?”

The grin of a man vastly happy with himself was on his face as he nodded. I thought I had figured out the mystery, but I hadn’t. He had deliberately planted clues to keep me off the trail. I admitted to being a poor detective and snuggled against his shoulder as I listened to Tomi Swick singing our song.
