He could charm every senior citizen with his smile, and the old ladies would love his strong arm to lean on. His back would often glisten with sweat as he bent over the hood of a car for hours on a summer Saturday morning, helping a neighbor.
Men aspired to be like him. Women fought to be near him.
He attended every church service, and travelled almost an hour to make it through rush hour on Wednesday night, just to go to Bible Study. He would often encourage his fellow believers to serve other people in the name of Christ.
His voice rose in harmony with the worship leader, adding simple strength to Sunday mornings. He gave pep-talks to young teens on abstinence, purity, and respect. Scripture would be quoted by memory at appropriate moments. Parents would encourage their boys to hang around him, and mothers who had eligible daughters would invite him over for dinner on Sunday afternoon.
But, dear reader, take a step further with me, into the realm of the unknown, and let us explore a secret with depth.
This man was thirty-two when he passed away. A semi-truck accident ended his life, and he was thrown into a realm that millions have only wondered at. They wonder, at least, until their turn comes.
But lets peel back the skies and stars and plunge into the farthest atmosphere. Ride on wings of angels, and lets grab a glimpse, if we could manage, of what our perfect man now sees.
He was confident about this moment while he lived on the earth. Heaven seemed like it was in the palm of his hand. He looked forward to the moment when all of his good deeds would be exposed to the world in the heavenly realm.
But now...?
Now, he cowers, not daring to lift his eyes.
Light... grandeur... beauty spills from a Throne. But it is the One who sits on the throne that he now fears.
All goodness, purity, and righteousness pours from the Royal One's eyes. There is no shadow in His presence. No hint of evil. No evidence of sin. Only glory. Only Him. Everything is exposed in light.
They spoke, this man and his Maker. I cannot tell you what they said, for I don't know. I only can tell you that no man or woman could speak with Him and not tremble. But it is the moment after they spoke, dear reader, that forever grips my mind.
The King of kings simple pointed to a large book that sat open beside Him. The truth was about to be exposed. When He spoke, His voice was filled with pain, and sorrow.
“Depart from Me. I never knew you.”
WAIT!!!!! STOP!
He did all these wonderful things! He preached Your Name! He told others about You!
“I never knew you.”
But he lived a moral life. He helped other people. Everyone thought he was Your child.
“I never knew you.”
But... but...
“I... never... KNEW... you.”
Shoulders slump. All that was thought real was now exposed in light of truth.
To know Him is all that really matters.
To love Him, to delight in Him, to dig into Christ... that is what counts. Not what you do, not who you serve, but Who you know, and what He has done for you.
Who we are is always exposed in light of the Truth.
