The criticism, of course, is that by leaking government secrets people will be put in danger. Their stated motives are to expose wrong-doing because if shady dealing, corruption and general wickedness is not exposed then it continues. Tyrants get away with murder, theft, mass crimes against their own people, and either we don’t know about it, or we are too afraid to stand up to them, unable to bring them to account.
When Jesus said long ago that what was spoken in secret was to be shouted from the housetops, his hearers could not even visualise a future society with satellite dishes on every house and internet connections able to fling news around the world faster than our minds can comprehend. It is only in the modern world that communication is so fast and networks can be hacked and secrets revealed on such a scale.
We have moral choices to make every day. I came across a quote recently that says the world judges me by the decisions I make; never does it see the options I had to choose from.
Just as well God is still in control and we have a righteous judge, who will sort it all out in the end. He knows the story behind the stories.
As we are told in Hebrews, Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
There is a day of reckoning coming, and God has his ways of bringing justice, maybe now but often in the future. Sometimes it is a matter of timing.
Paul wrote Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive praise from God.
Wow, this brings another perspective. It may be scary, but it can be thrilling. How many people do we know (and even more we don’t know) who are working from pure motives for the Lord’s glory and kingdom? People not looking for fame and fortune in this life, but who commit themselves and their work to the Lord who judges justly. The glorious day is coming when each will receive praise from God.
Bradley Manning receives a lengthy prison sentence, and Edward Snowden seeks refuge in a foreign country. God knows whether what they did is right or wrong. Our priority is to examine what we are doing. What are our motives? God knows our hearts and it is a wonderful thing to commit ourselves to him who judges justly.
