From suburbs cramped an exodus
As outbound freeways overspill
With camper, car and crowded bus.
To destinations by the sea
Or camping grounds in wild retreats
The fleeting city dwellers flee
Like children chasing hidden treats.
Tent pegs are hammered into place
Game rooms and pool are keenly sought;
Mild form of mayhem fills each space
In this once sane idyllic spot.
The smoke of barbecues dispels
The smell of salty ocean spray
As feeding frenzy quells the yells—
It’s hungry being on holiday!
The noises wane to night-time’s reign
Save for the lapping waves now dull;
Tomorrow promises the same—
All snuggle down in settled lull.
It’s Easter week-end holiday
A time for fun when all unwind;
The ‘great escape’ is under way—
Should not these days bring Christ to mind?
This holiday bears testament
A silent witness to all men
Reminding of a great event
When God through Christ redeemed from sin.
Earth, sea and sky forever speak,
Our God and Maker they extol,
So likewise should the Easter week
Cause men to ask—“What means it all?”
These are the times of unbelief
When God is far from most men’s minds;
At such a time He comes as thief—
Beware that you’re not left behind!!
