Just then the door bell rang.
"Who could be calling at this time of evening?" she asked.
Opening the door, Candace was shocked to see a marching band playing a love song, along with a multitude of glowing candles on the sidewalk and twelve dozen roses in vases spread over the lawn.
Jumping from a large bush by the front door, Darryl got down on one knee blurting, "I love you too, Candace. Will you marry me?"
"MOM…HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP," Candace screamed which was the last thing she remembered before waking up on the sofa.
"You're certainly up early," Anne, Candace's mother, said the next morning. "Feeling any better?"
"I've had better days. I'm up early cuz' I need to get to the bottom of this fiasco. I've never been more mortified in my life," she said while putting on her coat.
"I imagine your friend, Darryl, knows exactly how you're feeling. He seemed pretty inconsolable last night," Anne responded while flipping a pancake in the air. "Poor guy."
Grabbing her car keys off the counter, Candace headed for the door. "Mom, I barely know the guy. That's why I've got to find out how this happened. My first stop is with the band director. Maybe he can shed some light on it."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After questioning the band director as to why Darryl was at her home proposing the previous night, he answered, "That was my doing. I knew he'd been pining for you for a long time. I told him the good news…you were madly in love with him too. I never dreamed he would want to move so quickly but he does have it badly."
"Why would you tell him that I love him?" Candace asked while rubbing her throbbing forehead.
"I was eating lunch at my desk next to one of the practice rooms and I overheard two girls talking in one of the rooms. I wasn't eavesdropping, the door was open. Anyway, the girls were talking about how much Darryl loved you and then one of the girls said she knew for a fact that you loved him too."
"What girls?" Candace demanded.
"Let's see, one would have been Sandy Peterson, didn't know the other girl."
"Sandy? She's a good friend. Why would she say such a thing?" Candace demanded while running out the door.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Candace waited in line at the coffee shop until it was her turn at Sandy's cash register. Without waiting for Sandy to ask what she wanted, Candace jumped right in. "Sandy, the other day you were talking with another girl about Darryl. Why did you tell her I was in love with him? I mean, I hardly know the guy."
"I didn't tell her you were in love with him. I said you might be interested in him and that was a fact."
"Why would you say something like that when it isn't true?"
Sandy shrugged, "Your mom stopped by for coffee the other day. I heard her tell some lady you seemed to be interested in him. In fact, he was here at the time. That's how the subject of Darryl even came up."
Rushing for the door, Candace couldn't believe what she was hearing. "My mother has something to do with this?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slamming the door at home, she yelled, "MOOOOOOOOO-OM? Where are you? Get in here now. We need to talk."
"What's the matter, dear? Why are you upset?" Anne asked.
"Mom, how could you? You met someone at the coffee shop and told them I was interested in Darryl. Sandy was working, she heard you say it."
"I did no such thing. Yes, I met a friend of mine and we…oh, wait a minute. No wonder Darryl looked familiar. He was at the coffee shop too. There was a photograph I pointed to on the wall and he was sitting directly under it. I said you would find the picture interesting." Trying to hold back laughter, Anne continued, "You know, if it wasn't so tragic, this could be rather funny."
Candace looked over at her mother. As their eyes locked the giggles hit them both; together they went down onto the floor in a heap of laughter.
