I pray to my God, knowing I’ve changed.
Embittered by life, and feeling so alone,
Would He again show me the long way home?
Did they laugh at me, whisper in scorn?
I felt defeated, completely forlorn.
Famine threatened, so I followed my man.
A long journey to a prosperous land.
Two daughters-in-law; ten years of God’s grace,
My life blessed in that God-forsaken place.
Short-lived was my joy, long days I endured,
Widowed and childless, my fate then secured.
My sons’ dear wives had no future with me
I returned home to grant them liberty.
We walked arm in arm without speaking a word,
Our thoughts so loud, they could be overheard.
The pain of parting seared my heart into flame.
My selfish thoughts flooded my soul with shame.
Orpah bid farewell, kissed my tears away,
Ruth remained by my side, resolved to stay.
I argued and reasoned, without success.
No wise council could relieve her distress.
My God is her God, she boldly confessed.
I’ll remain with you, there we’ll be blessed.
I’ll not leave your side, even unto death.
I am your daughter until your last breath.
Our return at Harvest, helpful indeed.
Hungry and destitute, sorely in need.
Ruth began to glean in Boaz’s field.
He ensured she gathered the maximum yield.
She caught his eye, then he heard of her deeds;
How she cared for me, fulfilling my needs.
Boaz favored her, protecting her life.
Could he imagine Ruth as his wife?
I certainly could and plotted the plan.
At the threshing floor, the romance began.
Boaz decided to redeem his claim.
As family, he could give Ruth his name.
Not first in line, he made a fair appeal.
The exchange of sandals secured the deal.
Ruth and Boaz, joined as husband and wife.
All three of us blessed by a brand new life.
I hold this small child and know it’s His way.
Redemption has come and a brand new day.
My bitterness has ebbed, joy is my own.
God carried me, on the long journey home.
