THREE FACES OF JOY

Sherry: Alone but not lonely

Playful ideas twirl through my mind as I bolt my room.

I dance with my own imagination…. I feast with my own thoughts…

I’ve never realized solitude can be this beautiful and gratifying! My body stretches out in blissful contentment upon my bed, the silence of seclusion lifting my consciousness to such a blessed state.

“Ah! This is freedom! This…is pure delight!”

Cheerful beams pierce through the blinds, inviting me to look outside. I watch the afternoon landscape: birds above; blossoms below; earth colors everywhere.

I relish each moment. My heart is filled with warmth.

“Thank you, Lord for giving me eyes to see and appreciate the wondrous beauty in everything you have created!. Your magnificence shines through your handiwork! You are great and marvelous, oh Lord!”

Here, now, a song is born…

Wilma: Overwhelmed

I hear my baby’s first cry. I shed tears – not of sorrow, not of pain…but of pure joy and hope and love…

I guess all mothers are like this…

“Oh, baby!”

I can’t explain it…

I’m simply…overwhelmed.

Harry: Forgiven and Free

This is the most unbelievable thing on planet Earth!

You see, my life was such a terrible mess before I met the Lord! But look at me now! I’ve been reborn! Radically changed!

No more wild parties and empty revelries… No more dopin’ and drinkin’ and casual sex… Jesus has given me liberty from all these! I won’t trade nothin’ for it. No, never!

It’s really awesome to know that my past has no more power over me. The preacher says it’s all under the blood of “The Lamb.” Well, I believe he’s right. My Bible says that I’m a new creature in Christ.

Praise God! I’m fully forgiven!

Thank God! I’m totally free!

I think you did well to give the three characters different voices and evoke in a few words the situation and emotions that they find themselves in. I think I'd have liked a little more, especially in the middle scenario. Good stuff

I really like the idea of "alone joy" and "overwhelmed joy", which go against conventional, worldly wisdom. Nice job.

This is good. I, too would like to have seen a little more, especially in the middle section. I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of their "alone joy." Good job.

I'm impressed that you were able to give each character a distinct voice, and you conveyed each character's situation without "telling" too much. Good job on a creative entry!

I liked your approach to the topic. My only suggestion would be to develop the second character a bit more to fully express the feelings of being a new parent. Your first character was beautifully written.
