“I know one,” says Linda, describing it very slowly like a TV commercial. “Rich, gooey, hot caramel sauce colliding with the molten lava of hot fudge. It is the perfect topping for creamy, cool chocolate custard.” The words salivated off her tongue as her taste buds exploded.
“One of my favorites is creamy peanut butter slathered on a rice cake topped with cherry preserves. What an orchestra of tastes in the mouth. Then rewarded when washed down with ice cold milk,” Sandy avowed with a reminiscent smile.
“Rice cakes? Are you for real? Who eats rice cakes?” Linda bellows.
“I do, and have liked them for a long time.” was Sandy’s comeback. “Changing subjects, don’t you just love days like this?”
“Sure do.”
“I want to know more about the caramel and hot fudge fusion that you described. Tell me more about the molten lava. My taste buds swelled as you deliberately drawled out the toppings on that frozen custard. I wanted one as you spun the images through my brain. You’re such a food tease,” quipped Sandy.
Linda recanted the delicious details for Sandy to stimulate her mouth-watering all over again. Then she said, “Tell me one of your most decadent fav foods.”
“It’s a chicken dish my momma makes on special occasions. I watched her cook it one time. She took celery soup and poured in some white wine. I asked if it was gonna make me drunk. She giggled, and said no because the alcohol is cooked out in the oven. Her baking pan had all these chicken breasts that she covered with that cheese with the small holes. The soup and wine stuff covered it up, and she put breadcrumbs on it. I told her to put on more because ya never can have too many breadcrumbs. A little melted butter was poured on top. She baked it, and it’s the most scrumptious and tender chicken you’d ever eat.
“That sounds real good. All this talk of food is making me famished. Let’s get soft swirl ice cream cones,” said Linda.
They headed up from the beach boardwalk to the snack shack. They could get six-inch high chocolate swirl cones for a quarter—best deal on the boardwalk. They licked them clean down to the wafer cup. Then they chomped into the wafers simultaneously for that once-in-a-lifetime feeling of bliss—the union of wafer and swirl cone remnants.
After wiping their mouths, Sandy looked at her watch to check the time. “Best be getting home. Aunt Bessie will have cooked dinner by now. Want to stay and eat?”
“Sure. Have you noticed that all we talked about today was food? Delicious foods that whet our appetites, made our stomachs growl, and even though we are no longer hungry, we’re headed to eat more."
“Yep! It sure was fun talking about the food than eating all the calories.” Linda observed how her capris felt too tight on her waist. Barely any room left for dinner, but I’ll eat anyway because Aunt Bessie cooked the best meals.
Give us the food we need for each day. –Matthew 6:11 NCV
