In the book of Kings, chapter 15, Samuel was trusting Saul to do what God had commanded. After all, Saul was God’s chosen King for Israel! Samuel had anointed Saul and called him out from among his brothers for that great honor and responsibility.
However, one night, God spoke to Samuel and confided to him that he regretted making Saul king over Israel because Saul had disobeyed his command. Samuel was grieved and he cried all night. When morning came Samuel went to see for himself what God had told him concerning the direct order of the complete destruction of the Amalekites, all the people and animals. He was astonished. Samuel heard sounds as he approached Saul that disturbed him greatly; the bleating of sheep and the lowing of oxen. The Amalekite king had also been spared.
Obedience is what God required. The King of the Universe had given direction and instruction to the first earthly king of Israel. Was Saul such a fool that he had disobeyed? It was evident that Saul did not trust the one, true God and the “proof was in the pudding” of disobedience. Saul had chosen to do things his own way. A new king of Israel would be appointed and Saul would soon lose his own life at the hands of the king of the Amalekites whom Saul, himself, had spared. There are always consequences for disobedience.
Trusting God is one of the safest and rewarding things we can do. He always has our best interest at heart and, after all, that is what love is. The “proof is in the pudding” of obedience.
