During his leadership, Joshua fought against seven nations. God gave him a great victory over Jericho because he followed God's instructions. It must have been hard for him to believe that walking around the city and blowing trumpets would bring victory. But Joshua soon lost sight of what God had shown him at Jericho. Instead, he sought advice from his own warriors as they embarked on Ai. Because Ai was smaller than Jericho, victory seemed inevitable. However, the Israelites were defeated.
Three times God told Joshua to be courageous. He told him He was his protector and guide. All God demanded in return was Joshua's obedience. Joshua learned his lesson and followed God's instructions. The Israelites were able to overcome the nations. God promised no man would be able to stand against them. Victory came through obedience.
Obedience to God's Word fills our spirit with quietness, purifies our heart, sharpens our perception, provides direction, increases our faith, and give courage. Without obedience to God, there is no courage--there is no victory!
