However, I discovered a drip is a wonderful method for growing plants and flowers. Drip irrigation saves water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip slowly into the roots of plants. This occurs either on the soil surface, directly into the root zone, or through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters. It allows narrow tubes to deliver water directly to the base of plants.
This process was developed in Austrailia by Hannis Thill. Over the years, drip irrigation has improved by plastic emitters. In the United States, the first drip tape, called "Dew Hose," was developed by Richard Chapin of Chapin Watermatics in the early 1960s.
Modern drip irrigation may use devices called micro-spray heads, which spray water in a small area, instead of dripping emitters. These work well on tree and vine crops. For drip irrigation systems to work factors such as land topography, soil, water, crop and agro-climatic conditions are required.
Advantages of using drip irrigation are fertilizer and nutrient loss is minimized, water application efficiency is high, field level is not needed, recycled non-potable water is safely used, moisture in root zones are maintained at field capacity, soil erosion and weed growth are minimized, labor costs reduced, and foliage remains dry and lessens risk of disease.
The disadvantages are the initial cost may be high, sun can affect the tubes, clogging may occur which can waste water, time and the harvest if the system isn't properly installed. Also, rodents can damage the PVC pipes.
As a gardener, drip irrigation works well and helps to create beautiful plants and flowers. I truly have changed from irritation to irrigation.
