DO IT AGAIN

What was there to do now that everything had changed?

Deep in his thoughts he mumbled, “I guess its back to the job I left before I partnered with the Company. We had such high hopes of restructuring the world, silencing the opposing competition and controlling the market. But what can you do when the CEO gets killed and you don’t? Especially when there is no one to take the CEOs place? I guess it is back to the job for which you are trained Pete, the only way you know to earn your income.”

This could have been the self-dialogue of Simon Peter in today’s world.

So Peter went back to his fishing boat. He recalled that Jesus had told him that he would train him to catch people for the Kingdom. That did not seem likely now. But at the least he did have a way to earn his living and that was something, even though it held no interest for him at this time.

Peter met with some of the fellows who had also joined Jesus, and who were fishermen, they prepared the nets and set out to fish at night; the time when the fish are most vulnerable to being caught. Peter knew that Jesus had risen from the dead, but just how all that fit into his reality and into his life he could not put into place. It seemed to him as though the kaleidoscope of his life had totally changed to a different color, and a different design.

Daylight was breaking and Peter had some doubt that he could any longer earn his living by fishing. They had fished all night and he was almost too tired to engage in remorse about the results; they had caught nothing. He was hungry and exhausted and all he wanted to do was to go home and go to bed. Nothing was right without Jesus being with them.

Daylight is not a time for fishing so they headed back to shore, Jesus was standing on the shore and He asked of them, “Have you caught any fish?”
They answered Him, “We have caught nothing.”

Jesus asked them to do a thing that made no sense, He said, “Go back and cast the net to the right side of the boat.” They were not in the deep of the sea, but they did as He asked. They had been with Jesus long enough to know that the unusual requests He often made, which made no sense in their minds, worked quite well.

The net was overloaded with fish, so much that it should have broken, but it did not break. Peter was uncontrollably enthused that Jesus was present and he did not bother to wait for the securing of the boat; he jumped into the water and swam to shore.

For Peter it was a special time, not because of the fish only, but because Jesus asked him three times, “Simon Peter, do you love Me?” Peter was able to respond, “Yes” to Him each time and one could believe that it erased the three times that Peter had denied Him earlier. Jesus restored Peter to a new commission, “Feed my lambs and feed My sheep.”

Have not each of us experienced a time when we had cause to repent, and then to repeat our allegiance to Him?
