“Okay, girls, remember our deal. I want you married and out of my house, so the first one on the dance floor tonight gets $500.” Ted glared at each one of the girls; then he pivoted and stomped of to his meeting.
They turned and watched him enter the meeting room at the end of the hallway. “What a ‘deal’, $500 for messing our lives up!” Becky sneered.
“Yeah, if it weren’t for the prenuptial agreement Mom made him sign saying that we could live in their home until we were married, he would have kicked us out eons ago.” Chrissy waved her hands around, while Addy and Becky nodded in agreement.
Addy cupped her hand over her mouth and, leaned toward her sisters. “Operation IT starts now!”
Addy and Becky scurried into the banquet room to hunt for a good-looking man.
Within minutes, Chrissy’s ears pricked at the sound of Addie’s laugh. “Hee-haw, hee-haw.” Next, she spied Becky talking with a guy while chomping gum and blowing bubbles. Turning her back on her sisters, she locked glances with a guy that had dreamy dark eyes and curly black hair. Her heart fluttered. Knowing she couldn’t resist joining in on Operation IT, she plastered on a smile.
“Hi, my name is Kurt.” He reached out his hand.
She stepped back as she yanked her hand free from his grasp.
While Kurt yammered, Chrissy racked her brain for a way to get him to leave her alone. She remembered the whoopee cushion that Addy insisted she bring. She hid the purse that housed her trick behind her back. While glancing around, she discreetly gave it a hard squeeze.
The rumble echoed across the room. “Oh, excuse me.” She hid her red face behind her purse. Kurt shrugged his shoulders and continued gabbing.
In dismay, she realized that her ploy to get him to leave her alone didn’t work. With an exasperated huff, she abruptly spun around and stomped her way to the restroom. After composing herself, she ventured out to see everyone sitting down for dinner. As she joined her family, her mouth dropped open when she spotted Kurt sitting across from her.
He stood when she got to the table. “I hope you don’t mind, Chrissy, but your mother offered to have me sit at your table since I am alone this evening.”
“No, not at all,” she stammered.
Chrissy couldn’t help but snicker when Becky stuck her gum under the table and picked her nose. Meanwhile, she spotted Addy eating with her fingers after which she plucked a toothpick from her purse and started gnawing on it. Ted just glared at them.
After dinner, the deejay stood. “It’s time to get this party going. Grab your sweetie and let’s boogie!” He gyrated his hips in time with the music.
Kurt turned to Chrissy. “Would you please dance with me?”
Together, Addy and Becky yelled, “You just blew Operation IT!” They jumped up and flounced away from the table.
Kurt led her to the dance floor and encircled her with his arms. He smiled and wiggled his eyebrows. “Operation IT?”
“Irritate Ted.” She swallowed, licked her lips, and hid her face against Kurt’s shoulder. “We were tired of Ted always trying to pawn us off on any available guy. Instead of flirting, we decided to be as disgusting as possible; hence, Operation IT.” She hung her head.
“Oh, I definitely think that Ted IS irritated.” He motioned with his head to the far corner of the banquet room. A red-faced Ted was standing over Addy and Becky, shaking his finger at them.
Kurt lifted her chin with his finger and chuckled. “When I saw you across the room, nothing could have deterred me, not even a musical purse.”
Messing up Operation Irritate Ted and having her sisters mad at her was a small price to pay for a wonderful time with Kurt.
As she put her head on Kurt’s shoulder, she started giggling when she realized they were the first ones on the dance floor. If Ted kept his promise, not only did she hook a gorgeous guy, but she’d be five hundred dollar richer too. Who said dreams can’t come true?
