Even when the women went to the tomb early Sunday morning, when they arrived they found the stone had been rolled away. The tomb was empty and when they looked inside two angels suddenly appeared, and the women were told Christ had risen. They ran back to tell his disciples what had happened, but the story sounded like nonsense and they didn’t believe it.
Even when two men traveling to Emmaus talked with Jesus they did not recognize him until he took bread and broke it. Their eyes were opened and they believed. They ran back to Jerusalem.
And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost. “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he ate it as they watched. Luke 24:36-43.
Thomas was not there when Jesus appeared to disciples and eight days later he appeared to all the disciples. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said, Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. John 20:26-28.
Later Jesus appeared to over 500 and they believed. Jesus commissioned His followers. “ Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place the hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” Mark 15-18
After this Jesus ascended into Heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
I have read the Gospel message many times, and each time I’m filled with awe. The extraordinariness of this event has changed the world, and through the death of Christ my sins are gone as well as all those who believe in Him; for our sins are nailed to the cross.
