Each day as I sat on my perch in my cage I sang my heart’s song to my companion while looking intently into her eyes. She and me… we were bosom friends. Goodness, why wouldn’t we be? She looked just like me, she did. From the gray tuft on top of her pretty little head to the way her tail feathers spread so pretty. Why, she even moved in a mirror image to my own movements.
She was a charade? I am crushed and heart-broken. She and I had a budding friendship. I had even named her since she couldn’t speak. Pear. That’s the name I gave her. She was a parrot like me, so that’s an appropriate name, don’t you think?
Who am I?
Oh, I’m Emily.
Aren’t I a beauty? I do keep myself so neatly groomed, don’t you think? I must keep up appearances for the many humans who stop by my cage. Keeping my yellow head and neck shining like the sun… my red, blue and green tail feathers glistening like a rainbow. Each day I look in my mirror and…
Oh. That’s right. Some human – I think my ‘owner’ – took the mirror away, saying something about my making too much noise when I looked in it and how it was causing me to be proud. Well. I’m just a bird. What do I know?
As soon as the mirror was gone so was my bosom friend… all this time… a charade. Go figure.
I hope they give my mirror back soon. I’m lonely.
