The women spoke about seeing two men there that resembled angels. The angels had asked them, “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” The angels told them Jesus had risen just like He said He would. After hearing that, the disciple Peter had ran to the tomb and looked in but had seen only the grave clothes. Bewildered he had gone away wondering where was Jesus or where was the body?
Three days ago Cleopas and his friends were certain that this man calling himself the Christ was just that. They were not the Twelve, Jesus’ inner circle, but they were His disciples. They believed the words that came from the mouth of Jesus, were truly the words of life. Now, the giver of that life and light was taken from them. So many questions, what happened today was certainly perplexing.
Cleopas and another disciple decided they needed to get out of Jerusalem for a while. They started walking towards Emmaus a village about seven miles away. Their thoughts and conversation were still on the events of the past few days and they were in deep conversation, when a man walked up and began walking with them. The two did not recognize him as Jesus.
He asked, “What are you talking so intently about that makes you look so sad?”
The two men stopped and looked at him incredulously, Cleopas said, “You must be a stranger in Jerusalem and the only person who has not heard what happened during the past few days.”
The man said, “What happened?”
The two rushed to tell the stranger everything. They said, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene. He was a man of God, a prophet, dynamic in his work and word, blessed by both God and men. But our high priests and leaders betrayed him, got him sentenced to death and crucified. We had our hopes up that he was the One, the One to deliver Israel. And it is now the third day since it happened. The women went early this morning to prepare his body and the story they returned with has completely confused us. The body was not there and they said they had seen angels who said he was alive.”
He said to them, “Slow learners, slow hearted! Why can’t you simply believe all that the prophets said? Don’t you see that these things had to happen, the Messiah had to suffer these things and only then enter into his glory?” He then started at the beginning, with the Books of Moses, and went on through all the Prophets, pointing out everything in the scriptures that referred to Himself.
When they arrived at the edge of the village, it seemed as if he were going on but they insisted that he stay and have supper with them. He went in with them, and when they sat down to eat, He broke the bread, blessed it and gave it to them. It was at that moment that their eyes were open and they recognized Him. And then he disappeared!
“No wonder our hearts burned within us as he expounded on the scriptures. My God, what a day!” exclaimed Cleopas, as he and his friend rushed back to Jerusalem to tell the others. “This day started with no hope and now our faith has been renewed.” Cleopas no longer felt perplexed or bewildered because he had been with the savior of the world, He lives!
