Smeared with peanut butter
And topped with tangles of blond.
Your eyes behold my face
In wonder, as you say,
“I a Princess, Mommy.”
“That’s right, you certainly are,”
I confirm, with a kiss.
“Oh.” You say, quite content,
As you go on painting
And solving wooden puzzles
In plastic high heel shoes.
“Mama, is Princess too,”
You confidently state,
“We are Jesus’ Princesses.”
“Yes, Babe, of course we are…”
“Oh.” you sigh, then smile,
Returning to your tasks.
While I still wrestle with doubt
And false humility.
You, in innocence, trust
In what He says is true;
That He lifts our hanging heads
And peers into our eyes
To see all we have done,
And all we ever will do.
He beholds our sin, and yet
By his blood, dresses us
In gowns of snowy white.
Our shackles snap unlocked
As He bestows on us the key
Proclaiming our freedom
As Daughters of the King.
What a beautiful gift
You are to me, Little One,
As I watch you humbly
Choose to accept His Grace
In innocence and rest.
Let us both sit on His lap
Wrapped in His arms of love,
Believing as He says
That we are blessed, chosen
Accepted, and adopted
Redeemed and forgiven.
Let me imitate you
My Child, by responding
Simply to the truth with
A resounding, “Oh.”
