She had barely gotten the pancakes on the table before the kids came running in. As soon as they had finished saying the blessing, the phone rang. Johnny had a cold and his mother, Jenny, could not take the car pool that morning. Not, what she had planned for the day. Abigail laughed, “God’s plans are never mine.”
She hung up only to have the phone ring again, she wondered what Jenny had forgotten. It was Mary, wanting her to teach the ladies class at church. I know that you are busy, but you do everything so well. We really need a good teacher. “I will pray about it and let you know,” Abigail had told her.
Tom, her husband, reminded Abigail; that she was already complaining about too much to do. He asked her if she could swing by and drop off a package in the mail for him.
She picked up the carpool kids and dropped them at school. Next, she started for the post office. When she started back home, she noticed the smell of burning rubber. She pulled into Wal-Mart. They told her it was a belt, but it would take an hour before they could get to her.
After making a quick trip around the store, she found a book that her husband had been looking at for two weeks. She returned to the waiting area. She set down next to a young mother who was also waiting for her car. Her baby was crying and the mother looked as teary eyed as the child. Abigail asked if everything was okay.
Jane told Abigail that her husband had just left her, her son was sick, she did not know anything about cars, and didn’t have much money. Abigail asked, “Do you know Jesus? Can I pray for you?” Though her tears Jane shook her head, “No, but prayer couldn’t hurt.” They prayed together. When they had finished praying the baby was quiet and playing. The salesperson walked up and told Jane the tire could be patched. He told Abigail her car was ready. Abigail told Jane about Jesus and invited her to come to church so she could learn more. Jane said she would. As Abigail, left she paid for both repairs.
It was later than she had planned. She stopped at Wendy’s along the way and parked at the school to eat. She heard a voice running through her head, “You are a failure, and you have not gotten any of the things you needed to accomplish done today.” It was a voice she knew too well. She could still hear her mother’s voice declaring her doom. She knew it was why she was such a perfectionist. Abigail started to give into to it when suddenly she stopped. Aloud she said, “No, not today. Satan, go away. I don’t want to listen to your lies.” The school bell rang and the kids ran out.
As she started to pull out for home, Ms. Johnson’s face popped up in her mind. She had been meaning to drop off her cake cover for two days. Oh well, it would just have to wait. Where the road split to Ms. Johnsons and the shorter route home, the image popped into her mind again. She took the longer route to Ms. Johnson and dropped the cake cover off.
After getting home, she called Mary. “I promised Tom I would not take on anything new. I do think you should take it. You have a gift and I think the Lord wants you to use it.
Tom entered the house and gave Abigail a big hug. “I was so worried, I heard a drunk driver hit and killed a family on the road you normally take home. It was just about time school released. Thank God, it was not you.”
Abigail said a silent prayer. “Thank you for speaking.”
God answered. “I promised if you ask for wisdom, that I would give you a wise and discerning heart just like Solomon. You have done well today.”
