What Do Potluck Dinners and Faithwriter’s Have in Common?

What do potluck dinners and Faithwriter’s have in common? It’s really quite simple, but I never thought about it until now.

I have a very picky husband when it comes to eating. He wants meat, potatoes, and dessert. When I insist, he will choke down a few raw vegetables, but not without numerous scowls. His idea of eating fruit is to have a banana split. Salt and pepper are the only good spices, and ice cream or chocolate bars are his favorite sweets. Most women will understand how uninspired I feel when cooking meals for my husband.

When I write, my husband treats my scripts like they are vegetables. He reads under protest, and then expresses so little interest that I have given up sharing with him what I have written.

I love potluck dinners because they provide me with an outlet where I can experiment and try out new recipes. I’ve noticed that what is good to one person may not be tasty to another, but it never fails that someone will “love” the dish and will ask for the recipe. Delicious is in the taste buds of the person eating the food.

The same phenomenon is present in the Faithwriter’s Weekly Challenge. It doesn’t matter what I write, because invariably someone will like the story, and another reader will not be impressed. A good read is in the eyes of the reader. The Challenge provides me with an opportunity to experiment and try out new styles of writing. A comment on one of my entries gives me the same satisfaction and sense of pride that I feel when someone asks for one of my recipes.

So the answer to what do potluck dinners and Faithwriter’s have in common is simple. They both provide a safe and friendly atmosphere in which people can experiment and be creative in a diverse community of opinions.

What a truth. I have a similar experince when I share my writing with my wife. You know the old cliche' "It takes one to know one."

Oh I enjoyed this. What a fantastic comparisson (metaphor?), and so very true.

My favorite sentence was "When I write, my husband treats my scripts like vegetables." This made me laugh, and from this moment on, I inhaled the rest of this delightful dish.

I found this very relatable, as I'm afraid I've crammed far too many green vegetable-like writings down the throats of my husband and close friends.

The trick, I suppose, is to create a nutritious piece, which looks incredibly appetizing.

My only comments are these: I would remove the second sentence, the repeated question. And, this is only my personal preference, but I would transpose the following sentence: 'I never thought about it until now, but it's really quite simple.

This is so true. I loved how you compared the two. I believe if you could find an appropriate substitute (one that everyone could relate to ) for faithwriters-for example church -it would make a wonderful devotion. Just add a scripture verse and prayer and you would have a devotion that many people could relate to. Good job.
