Then came in an unsubdued voice, "Grammy look."
I tried to ignore it, then a bit louder, "GRAMMY."
Okay, now he had my attention.
Raising my finger to my lips I said, "Shhh! We are worshiping now."
"I know that, Grammy, but you gotta see this."
I looked around at his pained little face, sat down, and pulled him close.
" What is it buddy?"
"Guess what, Grammy."
"What honey? "
"Look,"he began to wiggle one of his tiny lower front teeth.
"Wow that's cool, why don't you... "
I watched as he jiggled and out flew the tiny tooth.
I looked in the floor trying to find it.
"Grammy, blood."
"Oh, here honey," I handed him a tissue, "hold it on there," I said in his ear.
Meet and greet time was called. All our neighbors had seen the tooth pulling and gave Jalen high fives and clapped for him.
By the time folks were seated again, he was giving exaggerated toothless smiles to everyone.
I was still on the hunt for the tooth. Aha! I spied something with red on it on the floor. I pinched it in my fingers and handed it to Jalen's mommy, she eyed it, then snickered and cupped her hand to my ear, "It's a piece of peppermint."
"Oh," I said, and shook my head.
I doubled over once more scrutinizing the floor and the the seat. There it was tucked in a dip in the pew cushion. I dropped the tiny trouble maker into my daughter's hand. Jalen's eyes had followed my every move.
I put my mouth to his ear and said, "I bet that's the very first tooth God gave you."
"I bet it is too,Grammy."
That evening, "Here Jalen," she handed him a baggie," put it in here for safe keeping.
Tonight you can make a wish and put it under your pillow."
"This is a very important day for me, isn't it Mommy?"
"Yes, his mommy tried to cover her smile, it really is, little man."
