Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Calm (emotionally) (09/13/07)
The other night it rained. I mean really rained. And with the local drought and high temps, we needed it. As I lay in my bed in the dark, I listened to the rumbling sounds of the pressing storm. Within minutes I heard another sound, this one coming from down the hall. It was my six year old. “I’m scared” he’d said. I pulled the covers back and motioned for him to get in. He climbed over me and snuggled right up to his dad. With the blankets pulled up to his neck and secure in his dad’s arms, he went right back to sleep. The menacing storm kept on pelting and thwacking. But my son didn’t wake again till morning.

Maybe we should be more like that with our Heavenly Father. Life and circumstances sure can throw us a curve ball at times. Health or financial concerns can even cause us to be fearful. Each one of us face difficulties that can shake us. But what do we do with these intimidating hardships? I’d love to say that we always rush right to our Father and allow him to take them and to work on our behalf. I mean, Psalms 55:22 tells us to “Cast all your cares on the Lord” and he will sustain us, right? But we forget sometimes that He is an Almighty God and we attempt to wrestle the storm on our own.

There is something to be gleaned from watching a sleeping child in the arms of his parent. Oh, to rest like that in our Heavenly Father’s arms. It’s not unattainable. Just draw near to Him. He longs to give you that peace, even in the midst of your downpour.

I love the simplicity and strength of this piece. You did a great job of thinking outside of the box and choosing to write about something tender, loving, and calm versus something tragic and sad. Great work!
