I was given some material used by other Churches, but being me, I decided to try writing one myself. Now I was presenting the options for consideration. I was fairly new to this Church, and my long held fears of rejection came to the fore; Unwittingly, I felt that I had put the Vicar and Committee members in a position of making a choice, to go with a tried and tested version, or the one that I had created. I squirmed inside at the thought of a vote being taken, and how uncomfortable this would be for everyone.
In what I saw as a stroke of wisdom, I heard the Vicar say, “We have an embarrassment of riches..”
and looking to me, suggested that I should make the decision. In a stroke he had removed any possible rejection by him or the group, and I was given the opportunity to make the selection. I did in fact chose my own prayer, but could equally have gone for the other option. What impressed me most, was not the final choice, but how the Vicar handled the potential dilemma so deftly, so that neither I nor the group were embarrassed.
