Along my street, my block, my barrio,
Their eyes clouded, faces lined, shoulders stooped.
The least of these.
Consumed by hopelessness. Lost in shadows.
Struggling to survive self-inflicted destruction.
They cry out in silent despair.
I walk past them every day,
And they wait.
“... Vast fields are ripening all around us ...”
Father, grant me compassionate eyes.
I ask, “Can I pray for you?”
His hands tremble, muddy, nails torn.
“Got any change?” His voice rasps.
“A couple of bucks?”
His gaze wanders to the hooch
In the liquor store window. Slow poison.
“No, Sorry.” I pray anyway.
I walk past them every day.
My eyes burn.
“... For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard.”
Father, grant me a burdened heart.
“May I sit with you?” I wonder
To a woman draped in rags and filth.
She spits and curses, eyes wide
With hatred for me, the world.
“I sleep with Satan!”
Blood from an arterial wound.
My tears spill.
I walk past them every day.
But can’t just walk away.
“... Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere.”
Father, grant me determined hands.
