One sunny day while walking down the road my friend called out to me, “You are going in the wrong direction. If you do not turn around now, you will become lost.” Startled by his voice, I replied, “Which way should I go?” He pointed me towards a cross and told me to keep walking in that direction until I saw a beautiful place that was being preparing for me. He assured me the price had already been paid; all I had to do was accept his offer. How could I refuse?
As I started walking in this new direction, I realized he was walking along side of me. Whether I turned to the right or to the left, he stayed with me. Whenever I needed help he was there with an answer. When I was looking for a job, he found the perfect one for me. When I was sick and unable to prepare meals for my family, he had food delivered to my home. He took me in his arms and comforted me while I was grieving the loss of my mother. When my husband and I were looking for a new house, he led us to the most wonderful location. When I had difficulty making decisions in regards to my children, he gave me words of wisdom. He encouraged me to keep going when I became weak and tired from the daily hassles of life. He never left me and nothing seemed impossible for him to do.
I’m amazed at how he has continued to love me no matter how I have treated him. At different times over the years of our friendship I have turned a deaf ear to him, rejected his words, refused to follow his directions, and thought my plans were better than his, and still, he loved me. He has shown me forgiveness over and over. His grace and mercy towards me has been unending. He has been patient and kind to me when I didn’t deserve it. I’ve never had another friend like him.
Do you know my friend? Have you met him as you traveled the road of life? His name is Jesus; a great friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)
