She loves to experiment and throw in bits of this and that spice, create her own sauces and generally enjoy the task. Invariably the result is exquisite. But the real key to her method is knowledge. She knows what flavours combine well and the seemingly random measures of her ingredients that get added to the dish, actually have years of experience, knowledge and satisfied stomachs behind them. She cooks in the same way as a skilled musician plays his instrument.
It reminds me of a story, reportedly about Felix Mendelssohn. It seems that just before he was due to play a concert, a young aspiring pianist escaped the clutches of his guardians, ran up on to the stage and to the delight of the crowd, began to play Chopsticks. Mendelssohn walked on to the stage and rather than shooing the boy back to his seat, sat down beside him and said calmly, ‘You play on son, I’ll improvise.’
I am sure that often during our life journeys, the Lord looks down on us with knowing compassion, sees us stabbing away at life, trying to make history and ending up making a hash of things. It is in those times that the Lord steps in with His perfect measures of love and mercy, grace and strength and says, ‘You play on son and I’ll improvise.’ And we can trust His improvisation to make something beautiful out of the raw ingredients of our lives.
