decided to take a leisurely canoe ride
down the French Broad. The
morning was warm with summer sun and a
gentle breeze rustle our hair. The
canoe instructor told us to keep our
life jackets on at all times,
explained rowing techniques, and to
head for shore and put the canoe over
us if lightning occurred.
After getting into the canoe, we
struggled for a few minutes with
paddling. Occasionally we went left
when we should have been going right
and right when we should have been
going left. Once we drove the canoe
upon some rocks and had to hop out and
shove the canoe into the water again.
Finally, we smoothed out our ride and
enjoyed the serenity of the French
Broad. The blue sky danced with white,
puffy clouds. Along the river bank, a
blue heron stood like a stealthily
statute fishing for his lunch.
Nearby, a deer jumped out the bushes
with its white tail flagging hello to
us.
We were about three miles down
the river when we noticed the sky
darkened. Soon clap,clap, boom, boom
cut the air. In between the claps and
booms, lightning bolts flashed. The
water was the last place we wanted to
be. Furiously, we paddled harder to
outrun the storm. More lightning
flashed about us. We saw a small
cove away from trees. We paddled the
canoe into it. We darted out of
the canoe and flipped it over. Four
scared paddlers huddled under it. All
around us, thunder and lightning
crashed. Rain pelted down. We
encouraged each other with Scripture
and prayer.
Finally, the storm abated. We
jumped into the canoe and paddled four
more miles to our landing. We were
thankful we had taken time to listen
to our instructor. Although still
shaken by our experience, we had had
fun, learned how to endure a storm in
a canoe, and vowed we would do it all
again next summer! Hopefully, the
next trip would be truly on a clear
day!
