Wrought, before the world began
God in goodness, love and mercy
Made a way for fallen man
Bitter gall of human misery
Bonds of dark iniquity
Who could drink this cup of sorrow?
One said, 'Here am I, send me'
Vessel, brimmed with condemnation
Baneful, loathsome, brew of sin
All the righteous indignation,
Of God's wrath, contained therein
Prostrate, laying in the garden,
Blood-drops fell, in agony
As the Saviour prayed in anguish
'Father, take this cup from me'
On the cross, my Lord and maker
Tasted death for every man,
Drained the awful dregs of suffering
Perfecting redemption's plan
Cup of fury, cup of trembling
Poison chalice, draught for me,
But one look to Christ on Calvary
Fetters fall and I am free!
Now the cup is one of union,
Peace and pardon, which we bless,
Taste and see, this sweet communion
Jesus' blood and righteousness
Hallelujah, what a Saviour!
