When I was a child, I often dreamed of finding a hidden treasure.
My father was struggling during the “dirty thirties” with drought and the great depression. I often overheard conversations between my parents.
“Mabel, if we dry out one more year, I don’t know how we can survive!”
“Now Allen, we cannot think like that. God has promised to provide for us.”
Well, I had to work for the W.P.A. in South Dakota.”
“Yes, that is true; but look at it this way. For that time, the W.P.A. was the way in which the Lord provided food for us. This opportunity had not existed until right when we needed it. Then, God opened the door for us to move to Iowa, and gave us opportunity to rent this farm. We must believe He will continue providing for us and our family.”
There were many similar conversations between my parents, concerning the war, economy, expenses etc.
As a child, the part which impressed me was that faith in God always entered the conversation, sometimes by my mother and sometimes by my dad.
I actually prayed about finding the hidden treasure which I was searching for. I just knew if I could find that hidden box of gold bars, my parents would be rich and no longer poor. I knew we were poor, but there was always comfort in the mention of God’s provision for us, and I thought that my hidden treasure could be the solution which God would provide.
I didn’t actually accept Christ as my Savior until I was 13, but I did have faith as deep as my understanding went. I believe at that time, I thought I had been born as a Christian. Of course, the readers and I realize now, we are all accountable for our own commitment to Christ as our personal Savior, with a much deeper belief, and joy unsearchable.
We always had family devotions in our home, and started our day with God’s Word and prayer.
God did bless my parents, and with God’s blessings, and frugal living, my father owned a farm by the time he was in his 60’s. He had lost the land he was trying to purchase in South Dakota, and had started over at nearly 47 years of age.
Yes, to me, they had gone from rags to riches.
As I look back on my dreams of finding a hidden treasure, I realize I had been living with the hidden treasure. Even though we were poor, I had been rich all the while, as I had the opportunity to observe the meaning of Faith, and to experience the many provisions of God.
Yes, now that my eyes are opened, I realize that I found my hidden treasure, and it is far more valuable than the box of gold, of which I dreamed.
