He proposed and I said, “Yes!”
We married in one day, or less;
His furlough was over, “It’s back to Iraq,
We’ve got to get moving, I still have to pack.”
There was the license to get and the words to be said,
My mother was crying, my dad’s face was red
But they understood that I wanted my life
To be spent all the time as my brave soldier’s wife.
Then,on our night, I’m afraid that I cried
And when he looked worried I’m sure that I lied.
“I’m strong,” I fibbed, “And ready to wait
For that glorious day you walk back through that gate.”
Then he was gone, his promise to keep
And all I did was weep and weep
For weeks on end, sad and forlorn,
Until I felt that a life had been born;
A gift for us both, a wee little seed
Was growing inside, a blessing indeed.
Today is the day we looked so long for;
My soldier is coming, the one I adore.
We wait at the gate, our loved one to see:
His parents, my parents, our baby and me.
