Hands shot up all over the room. ‘Yes, Katie?’
‘Hearing, Miss!’
‘That’s right, well done. And today we are going to learn about things we can smell.’
A hand went up. ‘Miss, why can we smell?’
‘Why? Well, because that’s how God made us.’
‘Can God smell things, too, Miss?’
Miss Hall was relieved to hear the end of school bell ring before she had time to answer that question! ‘Ok, children, we’ll talk about this more tomorrow. Off you go, now.’
At home that evening, Miss Hall kept thinking about the question. Can God smell? She pulled her bible down from the shelf.
‘Lord, please help me. I want to find an answer for the children. Please guide me to the right scripture.’
She turned to Genesis 8 verse 21. ‘The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma’ from Noah’s burnt offering.
That answers the question then, thought Miss Hall, with a wry smile - Yes, God can smell!
By now, Miss Hall was well and truly engrossed in the topic, so she continued to look for other ‘smell’ scriptures.
She came to 2 Corinthians 3 verse 14 and 15, ‘God…through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ...’
Miss Hall sat and thought about that for a long time. Finally, she lifted her heart in prayer.
She thanked God for giving her an answer for the children tomorrow.
She thanked Him for guiding her to the scripture passages.
She thanked Him for choosing her to spread His fragrance in this world.
She apologised for the times when she did not spread His fragrance in this world, spreading her own ‘fragrance’ instead.
She asked Him to help her spread the right fragrance, His fragrance.
And she committed to become, wherever she went, God’s fragrance spreader.

Tip: double quote marks on conversation. I can tell you have a love for children, and are sensitive to their needs. Good work here. :)
