He must have been laughing in the corner this afternoon as Dr. Brennan examined my latest injury.
"Ow!" I exclaimed as he prodded my temple. "Can't you see it well enough without pushing on it?"
He stood back and eyed me with an impatient glare. "Ms. Hart, this is your fourth entry into this clinic in three days. You just received transfer to this outpost five days ago. What kind of work have you been doing, which would cause all these injuries?"
Before I could answer, he began poking my "other" injuries of the week. "On Thursday, you slammed your arm into a door, yes?"
"Ow! Yes," I said, rubbing the affected part. "It was closing faster than I thought it would."
He crouched down to poke at my leg. "And Friday you twisted your ankle."
"Ow! There was something slippery on the floor," I protested.
"Water, I would presume." His condescending gaze didn't help. "At least, that's what one expects to find in a greenhouse."
Sheepishly I looked down at the floor. "Okay, I'll admit it. I have a problem with gracefulness; or rather, the lack thereof. I tend to trip, slip, or fall on a regular bas - OW! - " His prodding of my head wound had resumed and I withdrew abruptly. "Can't I just get some stitches and go?"
"Hmmm." His noncommittal reply simply irked me. My clumsiness had resulted in a myriad of stitching jobs on all of my extremities, as well as the occasional spot on my head. "I assume you're up to date on your tetanus vaccination schedule?"
"Yes, doctor. Believe me, if anyone's been properly vaccinated, it's me."
"Hmmm, well, I believe it." He paused - for dramatic effect, I'm sure. "I will send Dr. Chase to clean your wound and stitch it. Do you think you can escape injury for at least one day?"
I grinned. "I have TWO days off."
"Uh-huh. Well, try to procure some walking lessons," he grunted as he moved away.
"Thank you, doctor," I said, too sarcastically, I admit. But really, shouldn't a doctor show more compassion? Seriously.
Dr. Chase, the young - and very attractive - intern, approached with his collection of supplies. I willed myself to remain calm as he smiled his dazzling smile. "So, you're back, I see."
I smiled in return. "Hey, you gotta get some practice in, right?" If only Christian guys were this good-looking! Seriously!
"Well, it beats practicing on raw chicken thighs." He winked, and I quickly looked down at my feet.
He busied himself with cleaning the injury as I winced and tried to refrain from saying "Ow!" every other second.
However at my twentieth "Ow!" he finally sprayed that numbing medicine which he should have put on first, a fact I pointed out to him.
"Yeah, but I figured you were pretty tough," he said. "You've had more than your share of stitches."
"Trust me, I've had my share, your share, Dr. - OW! - Brennan's share, and half the outpost's share."
He laughed. "At least you narrowly missed injuring your pretty face."
Said face began to pink instantly even as I vainly willed myself not to blush. Changing the subject, I asked as innocently as possible, "Hey, do you know the chapel schedule? I just - OW! - got here so I haven't had a chance to check it out."
He brightened instantly. "I usually go to the 9:15 service. You're welcome to join me!"
A Christian? For real? With gorgeous blue eyes and dark hair and handsome -
"Sure." I choked out. "Perhaps we can meet by the north courtyard at ten after?"
"Better make it the south one."
"Why?"
He winked again. "Might be a good idea to not use the stairs."
Hmmm....perhaps Someone's looking out for me after all!

I can't get past the fact that it seems unethical for medical staff to date their patients.
But oh, I've had a few hunky physicians in my time,,,,,,,
