Grasping them individually seems okay. Together? That’s another story. It’s more than God is everywhere all the time. And yet it is. Please read on.
I like to think of the three in relation to a record, the old vinyl record. Remember them? The record was placed on a turn table to rotate around. A “needle” was then placed into grooves on the record. The grooves had small lateral wave forms that caused the needle to vibrate as it moved through them as the record turned. The faster the needle vibrated the higher pitches were produced and the slower vibrations caused the lower pitched sounds. The vibrations of the needle were converted by a mechanism attached to it into electronic signals, then amplified and sent to a speaker and thus music. Simple, yet effective enough to give a fair rendering of the artist.
How does this relate to time, God, and His omnipresence? An understanding of a part of the concept of time in needed. Einstein (don’t stop reading) proved that time is in the universe, not the universe is in time. There’s a difference. If the universe ceased to exist so would time. Time is the “fourth” dimension (up and down, side to side, and forward and backward being the first three). The Bible tells me God is omnipresent (He is everywhere). I can imagine Him hearing the prayer of the African child, comforting a mother in England, and performing a miracle in Iraq – all at the same “time”. I also understand that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. A day to Him is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day – He is unaffected by time, the same as He is unaffected by distance. He is throughout time (the fourth dimension) the same as He is throughout the universe. He “sees” tomorrow better than I “see” yesterday. As an aside, this concept makes it easier to understand and trust God when He “predicts” the future, makes promises, gives me assurances – to Him they already have been accomplished, literally. My trust in Him is should be solid!
Now back to the record illustration. As the record turns and the player does its work I hear the music and perhaps even recognize the tune. Imagine that each one of those grooves which makes the music is an individual, you and me. When it’s my turn to vibrate that needle I give it my all and the note is made, then you, then someone else and before long a tune is heard. As I look back over the Old and New Testament I can see how God’s song is being played out, His music for eternity. In my life I might hear part of a small selection and perhaps pick up the tune and even how it fits into the over-all melody. What I can’t know for sure is how the rest of the melody goes after I’m gone (other than what is revealed in His Word). Nor do I know exactly how the finale sounds.
God, Who is not affected by distance or time, is like someone looking down at the record, not only hearing but seeing each individual note in the entire song, all the verses, the chorus, even the finale all at the same “time”. The finale which is waiting for us to sing and hear together for eternity when we all get to see Him face to face! Praise God! Hallelujah! Come Lord Jesus! Our Director! Amen!
