When he was being taken around
to meet people that I worked with,
everyone was shaking his hand and telling him
they were proud of the job that
he had done.
He would smile a small smile.
No arrogance to be seen on his face.
Just humility in its place.
I was proud to be his mom
and especially proud he had made it home alive.
When the time came one day to sit and talk,
I was stunned to hear him say,
"I do not feel like a hero".
He has memories that will always plague him.
Memories that he may never share.
People say it will take time
but I wonder if there is enough time.
So when you meet a soldier and
you say to him,
"You are a hero"
please try and remember that what they
had to do did not make them
necessarily feel like heros.
They may even say,
"We were the bad guys,
the goons".
May we all pray constantly for our troops who
are still serving and for those
who have served.
Years down the road,
we may forget
but they unfortunately never will…
