College was her dream. When signing up, she had deliberately selected a course of study that did not include the dreaded subject. However, upon entering the institution, she learnt that all students had to do first year Math. Georgia could not drop out of college. Too much money had already been spent, the three younger sisters were still in school and her parents just could not afford to help. How could she tell them?
She felt a gentle touch on her shoulder. She had been so lost in thoughts, she did not hear Sharon approach. Her roommate reached out her hand.
“Come on girl, we will fight it together.”
Sharon had failed English Language again. She also had a last chance resit. The two friends went to the chapel gardens and committed the situation to the Lord.
A week later, they entered the examination room. Much midnight oil had been burnt, each teaching the other the rudiments of her respective challenge. The day of reckoning had now come. The invigilator issued the question sheets. A whispered prayer and they were off and running. The discussed instructions raced through Georgia’s head:
“Take ten minutes to read the paper carefully and thoroughly. Relax. Do the easier ones first so you will have a little more time to tackle the harder ones. Do not spend too much time on any question. Trust the Lord.”
Finally they heard “pens down.” Their fate now hung in the hands of the markers. Both met outside. It had not been too bad. Results would be out in a week’s time.
The following Monday, Georgia hurried to view the notice board again. Professor Gordon, coming from the opposite direction, greeted her:
“Hello Georgia, I’m afraid you did not do too well on the exam.”
The tremors started from her feet and moved up.
“Sir, that is, that is, im, impossible” she stuttered.
“And why is that?” he queried.
“Sir, I did my best!”
“Anyway,” he said, “I was only joking.”
He chuckled and moved on.
Georgia crumpled again.
