Whispers never go unnoticed, though often unheard and misunderstood. While noise and activity would for most people indicate life and liveliness, the truth is that God speaks in the quietness of a whisper. Secrets, intimacies and solemn vows are shared in whispers and hard spiritual lessons.
Great men like Elijah were slow to learn this. The prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel were head-on confrontational stuff. The kind of thing you tell your grandchildren about. Then the small cloud like a man's hand and the marathon run with the king; all adrenaline-pumping events. But his own personal cloud burst when the queen threatened his life. He needed the whisper of the Lamb, not the roar of the Lion. So somewhere up a mountain in a cave the man who had given everything for the Word needed refreshing and renewing by the Whisper.
So shall we learn the lesson that brings us awareness of the intimacy that Jesus longs for? I think not, at least, not immediately. We will wait until we are exhausted, running here and there, burning into the fibre of our relationships until they are ready to snap. No, for us, the Whisper shall be lost to the first-fiddle of our busyness.
