She reached for the paper towels and gingerly wrapped four of them around the rejected spud. "It'll take days to get this stench out of here." She wrinkled her nose at the obnoxious odor. You could almost see the smell waif its way out of the kitchen and into the living room past her husband's nostrils.
"Wendy, what is that smell?"
"It's a rotten potato."
"Well, get it out of here. The whole house is starting to smell."
"I know. I'm trying, but every time I try to pick it up my fingers sink deeper into the rot."
Max appeared in the doorway, "Get the dustpan or something to slide under it. Look out, you're pushing it across the floor."
"I can see that."
"Here, give it to me." Max took the dustpan and slid the edge under the disgusting mess.
"There, you got it," Wendy said excitedly, "Hurry take it out to the garbage can."
"Get me a plastic bag to put it in or the neighbors will think we have a dead body over here."
"Maybe you should bury it in the yard. Should I get the shovel?" Wendy asked.
"No, it would probably sprout in the spring and then we'd have a potato bush growing in the yard," Max joked.
"You really think that rotten potato could grow into a plant?"
"Sure, look at what God does with us. He takes our odious lives and turns us into sweet smelling servants. Even though the rejection of His Son caused the foulest stench to invade heaven he still offers us the opportunity for new growth and the chance to produce beautiful fruit for Him."
"That's all well and good Max, and I'm glad you see God in every situation, but can we take this unredeemable potato out to the garbage can? God will understand that we can't stand the smell of rejection and rot anymore than He can."
