At four years old my daughter is comforted thinking that God feels things like hunger pains just like she does. It makes God real to her. When I think about God being hungry during those storms I know the reality. God doesn’t feel hunger pains but he does feel the pains of the hungry.
We’ve all seen hungry people. We’ve seen pictures in magazines or in flyers at our churches. We’ve watched them on tv commercials. We’ve seen them on the streets or in the soup kitchens. We look away. God doesn’t. And God sees not only his hungry children but how we respond to them. “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat… (Matt 25:35 NIV). When we volunteer our time to help feed the hungry and when we donate food to a food pantry we aren’t simply “doing God’s work.” We are giving to God. God is there and “…God is love…” (1John 4:16 NIV). If we can learn to see God in everyone, even those who are hungry and not look away, we have taken a step closer to His love.
God’s tummy doesn’t really growl during a thunder storm. My daughter knows that. She also knows that God is real and near her all the time even through the scary thunder storms in her life. He’s there too with the hungry in the storms of their lives. Don’t look away. Look at Him.
