For things we do not know,
For things that we can now but glimpse
Through open, yielded souls.
For when our tears are selfish,
They show that God withholds
The bad things that we ask for
From hearts austere and cold.
And when our tears are mournful
They show that God provides
A means to filter all our grief
And care we try to hide.
And when our tears are hopeless
They yet reveal the cry
That ends up at our Father’s throne;
Is answered by and by.
The tears that come from baby
Show just how helpless we
Would be without the Providence
That shelters, clothes and feeds.
When tears are soft and happy
They point to heav’n above,
To the gracious, caring Father,
Who showers us with love.
Our tears are prayers of longing
For things we do not know,
For things that we can now but glimpse
Through open, yielded souls.
