TITLE: Don't You Bite Me, Mrs Addy By Tammie Smith 10/01/04 |
|
“I wont bite you” was scarcely audible over the sounds of the hospital.
Mrs. Addy looked at me with her big brown eyes that seemed filled with such wisdom and love. Over time, I had developed a special bond with her.
“She can talk? I didn't know she could talk.” The charge nurse gruffly stated this as she stuck the IV needle into Mrs. Addy's arm.
“I have been telling you that she could talk for a week.” I said as, Mrs. Addy kissed my hand.
Mrs. Addy had a stubborn nature at times. She had decided to talk only to me. I kept telling everyone she could talk, but she just wouldn't show them. I am not sure why she chose me, but I always felt special when I was around Mrs. Addy.
Mrs. Addy was an elderly lady who lived in one of the local nursing homes. She would have to come to my floor, at the hospital, often to care for her many ailments. We never knew how old she was, but we knew she was close to one hundred.
After the nurse was done with the IV, I helped Mrs. Addy change into a clean gown. I also spent sometime brushing her soft dark hair and helping her to wash her face. I turned her to face the window so she could look out onto the hospital grounds. I was rewarded with a great big toothless smile for my efforts.
This was one of the last encounters I had with this wonderful woman who stole my heart during my days as a nursing assistant. She passed away not long after this.
Over the years, I have thought of Mrs. Addy. Even after I became a nurse and had many other patients, I never forgot her. Taking care of her was such a rewarding experience.
I can still see her smiling face and remember the joy I felt while visiting with this lady.
Sometimes rewards are not something you can pick up and look at. They are rewards to your soul. These are the rewards God gives. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17. When we take time to spend time with him and make him comfortable in our heart then we are rewarded with joy and peace. He gives us the gift of joy and peace as a reward for being his true and faithful servant.
