TITLE: Angel the Mutt Dog By Tammie Smith 09/18/04 |
|
“No, Tammie, you don't need another poster.”
“But MOOOMM, it is only two dollars. Why not?” the whining continued.
“It is time to go.” She said as we headed toward the door of the mall.
“OH, look how cute” she said as we approached the toy store. “She would absolutely love this.”
She paused to pick up the white fluffy toy dog that barked and bounced around on the floor. “I have to buy this for her” she declared.
“Mom, that is 10 dollars. Your not gonna spend ten dollars on her and wouldn't buy me a two dollar poster. Are you?” I said in a not so happy tone.
I couldn’t' believe she was believed that she was going to buy her that toy. She wouldn't like it. All she will do is bark at it and run from it. She will be scared of it.
“Your ‘sister’ will love this toy.”
My sister. She was not my sister. I am not sure when my parents began to think of the dog as their child. They babied her and treated her like a member of the family. This event, was just one of many, where the dog was given special treatment.
Raven Angel was her name, though, I always called her muttdog. She was a black toy Pekinese and was spoiled rotten. My dad would buy her canned food because she didn't like hard. Once when I was in college I had to dog sit for them. They would send bags of frozen chicken for me to cook for the dog.
As Angel grew older she had more and more health problems. When she had a slipped disk and couldn't walk, my dad carried her every where.
I guess I can't really blame my father for treating our dog like this. His grandmother was the same way. Her dog, Ginger, was a beige Pekinese. She would give Ginger liver to eat because she didn't like the dog food. Ginger was allowed to sit in a chair at the table during Thanksgiving dinner.
Now that I am an adult with kids and a dog. I find myself looking for special treats for the dog just as I do for my kids. I hope that I instill the love of pets into my children as my parents did to me.
