TITLE: Dance? At the Prom?? By Brenda Fletcher 08/09/04 |

I remember so vividly shopping for my dress, looking at flowers, making sure my date and I were color coordinated, checking on seating to be sure I would be with my friends, you know all the important stuff. Then the night arrived, I was so excited! My date picked me up, we looked gorgeous together, and off we went to a night to remember!
As expected the Prom was a huge success. Everyone had a wonderful time talking with friends, comparing shoes, dresses, and make-up. We took pictures, ate until we were sick, and scavenged pieces of decoration for our memory books. The punch was stale, and the music was too loud. So many memories that I recall so easily, except one, dancing.
This was the Prom, only the biggest DANCE of your entire school experience, but I don’t remember anyone dancing. Even if someone ventured out on the floor it was short lived, or it turned into a huge group activity that may have resembled dancing, but it really wasn’t. How ironic was that? The Biggest Dance, yet no one danced.
Reviewing these memories delivered an entirely unexpected thought. I began to realize that sometimes this applied to church. I would love to say that every time I went to church I was consumed by worshipping the Lord, but I would be lying. I have found myself off track in the past. I went to teach Sunday school, to see my friends, to be sure I was signed up for and event or occasion, even to show off a new outfit, but sometimes I left the worship out of the worship service.
I think this is why our walk has to be a day by day, step by step experience. It is harder to get distracted from the most important reason I attend church if I take up my cross everyday. This keeps us from simply practicing religion, and truly worshiping our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The book of James tells us that religion without works is in vain. My prayer is that I never attend a worship service without worshipping.
