The element of teaching that attracted me wasn’t the actual academics of it however, it was the respect and reverence that I had for those in the position of teaching me. I thought as a child that they knew everything, then as I grew older, my perception changed to more respect than anything else. I remember teachers as being in control, commandeering a classroom of thirty students with such ease and grace that they seemed to be almost superhuman.
I’ve had teachers that made me feel like dirt and I’ve had teachers that made me feel like I could reach the stars. I learned from both. From the first type I learned that everyone isn’t kind and encouraging and that you can’t judge yourself based on someone else’s actions towards...or opinions of... you. From the latter I learned that there are special people placed in our lives that can see something in us that not everyone else can see and these are the people that help to propel us into the future with a foundation that will make us successful.
I never became a teacher but I have taught. This is the essence of life, for in teaching...we share what we have learned...we build bridges that connect us with those whom God has placed in our lives...we tear down and strip away the baggage that would hold us back. In teaching we earn the respect of our peers by setting an example and living up to the standards of excellence that have been set before us by our ancestors. With this comes great responsibility, for it is our lives and the way we live them that has the most influence on those around us.
