TITLE: The giant By gillian liversedge 05/12/04 |

Even from a young age he’d been the weak one, the wimp. As a toddler, he had been left crying, while all the bigger boys pushed in front of him to use the slide or the swings. Slightly older, and at school, he had been bullied all the time. The same group of boys, led by one, huge boy, had teased him and laughed at him, stolen his pencils and rubbers, destroyed his work, and generally made his life a misery. How he longed to be big, like this giant of a boy. He would then be able to join the gang, be part of the crowd, accepted, respected by this one lad, his nemesis.
Now a young man, his life had not improved. Never able to get a girl friend, he looked on as these lads seemed to be so successful. They had girl after girl, drove cars, seemed to have money. There life seemed to be one long party after another. What had he done wrong, that his life should be so unhappy?
But now this giant, this strong young man, had had an accident. Out joy riding, he had crashed the car, and was now in hospital, in intensive care. The police were waiting to arrest him. Abandoned by his friends, and rejected by his parents, this giant was alone and hurt. So here was Tom, at the hospital, on his way to visit.
Last night, Tom had read a story about a young boy who had slain a giant, using only a pebble and the backing of His God. As Tom thought about his life, he prayed that he, with the backing of His God, could bring a life to a giant.
