To heights and breadths of worldly splendor
Reaching ever higher, further still
Filling myself with riches greatly spoiled
And, knock not at the gate of the city of Jersusalem
I remain as poor as the beggar sitting by the side of the road.
Though I foolishly toil
To find my own way along this rocky, crooked path
Knowing not which way to go hither
Losing my troubled self on a path pulling this way and that
And, find myself not at the gate of the city of Jersusalem
I am as lost as the groping, blind man.
Though I put my faith
In the knowledge of this wretched world
Frightfully slipping, sinking daily
Never finding true justice
And, find myself not at the gate of the city of Jersusalem
I am as ignorant as the mindless sot.
When I finally find the road of faith that leads to that city
I stand at the gate of the city of Jersusalem
My troubled heart finds such lasting peace so freely given there
I now hear Him speaking peace to my wretched soul
My fretting mind now rests in Him.
I can feel His kiss of righteousness on my life
Peace floods my soul
I will forever stay within the gates of that beautiful city
Resting now in the peace of the Father and of the Son
Longing now for your stedfast law
That brings me such peace in that perfect city.
