TITLE: The Center Peace By Rebekah Bentley 03/19/04 |

A quilt none can see
For it exists merely in my mind
But it is there
As real to me as my own reflection
It is pieced together with love
Sewn by my own fingertips
With the thread of life
I add to it often
A piece from my closest friend
One from a neighbor
Another from a relative
All sewn around one large center piece
This center that all else is sewn around
Is my Lord
My peace
As time goes by I add fewer pieces
Until I can no longer remember
The last time I added to my precious quilt
Then to my dismay
The stitches begin to pull loose
And the pieces fall apart
I clutch desperately at the few fragile threads
That hold my quilt together
But nothing helps
Grasping in my hand what little bit is left
I crash to the floor in a heap
Allowing hot tears to stream down my face
Everything that I worked so hard for
The quilt that I so tenderly pieced together
Is gone
Nothing more than a few threads
I slowly open my hand to see what I hold
And a smile plays across my lips
Despite the tears
For in my hand I hold the only remaining part of my quilt
The constant in my life
That piece that all the rest were sewn around
In my hand I hold the center piece
