The word promise is used loosely these days. It use to be that buisness transactions or sales were made on a promise. A promise to pay back or to keep your word. Use to when you broke a promise you also broke your honor.
Breaking a promise was frowned apon. You lost credability with others. You were not trusted. Breaking promises just did not happen.
Now in 2004 breaking a promise means you must of had a good reason or You've just hit hard times. The world has took the black and white out of promises and made it a very grey area.
When someone looks at you a says "Oh I promise I won't say anything or I promise I will do that before I leave.ect.." Do you take that as a most definite. You should be able to. To promise means that with all your might, no matter what, you will make a way to do what you promise.
Did God not promise to send his Son to earth to live among us and die for our sins? What if he thought after making that promise that it was just to difficult? Where would we be?
Christ also promised to return to earth and take us home to eternal life. The best promise of all. Christ is not grey. He will return because he made a promise to us.
Think before using the word promise or making a promise and realize the commitment you are truly making. Then decide whether you will just try or you truely promise.
