A young woman and a young man are sitting close together on a bench. She is very fond of him and he would rather be in her company than anywhere else. As he shifts his body closer and places his arm around her shoulders, he pulls her closer. Her heart races faster. He turns his face towards her, leans in closer. Her hair is tickling his nose, yet, he places his lips close to her ear and ever so quietly tells her gently, "I love you," for the first time.
In another scenario we see a young girl in the hallway of a hospital. Her mother has had a heart attack and there is not much time left. There has been much estrangement between the two for many years. In the mother's weakened state she calls for her daughter. As the reality of the situation sets upon the daughter, she is overcome with emotion and tears flow easily. The tubes and wires now attached to her mother, is almost too much to bear. This daughter left home in haste and anger, wanting to live her own life with no concern of how much the lifestyle saddened her mother's heart. The young woman becomes frightened, but walks closer. Her mother raises her hand and motions for her daughter to come very close. The young woman can barely get the words out, "I'm sorry, please forgive me. I love you." Her mother's voice is almost inaudible. She swallows and the daughter leans into her mother's face. In the whispers come the words, "I have always loved you. I will always forgive you. You are my baby. There is nothing you can do to change how much I love you."
These are significant words that are quietly spoken, but always remembered. Quietly, God speaks in the rustle of the leaves on a hot summer day or in the quiet, alone times with God. He will speak. We just have to listen.
