The heart is a mighty organ and its musical rhythm of thump-thump-thump is only a whisper of its controlling power. The whisper is usually so low that the steady beat goes unnoticed as our daily lives unfold. Without the hearts steady, unceasing whisper our lives cease to be.
So too is Christ’s whisper. When He called you to Himself it was with gentle prodding not thunderous bellows. If you belong to Him his surrounding love is a constant companion and lessons are learned by us through his gentle whispers of guidance.
But just as the heart can stop its whispers so too can Christ. Our suppression of his voice can become a natural way of life. The first time might not be very serious but each time His whispers are ignored by us it becomes easier and easier for us to sin. Until one day we wake up and realize that we no longer even hear His whispers.
That isn’t because He has stopped talking, but because we have chosen to stop listening. He waits patiently for us to recognize our departure from Him, but what is the most amazing thing, is that He is waiting for us, with open arms, when we decide to return. That’s not to say we won’t have to pay the consequences of our actions while we “tuned out,” but His forgiveness is there waiting if confession and repentance are our desire.
Sometimes I wish He would shout at me when He sees me headed for disaster, just as my hearts thumping lets me know when I’m in some sort of trouble. Maybe then I’d listen better. Maybe then I’d take notice of my sin before I commit it. But with human nature what it is, Jesus knows that if I won’t listen to his gentle prodding, I wouldn’t listen to His bellows either. His soft whispers are sufficient if only our ears are tuned to his callings. So much pain and suffering could be avoided if only we would heed His whispers.
If you don’t belong to Christ and are reading this little article take heed to Christ’s quiet whispers. He has led you to this very page at this very moment in hopes that you will allow Him to whisper His love for you. He wants to show you that He loves you so much that He went to a cross and died for your sins. All He asks in return is that you accept His free gift of salvation by asking Him to be your Savior.
If you already belong to Christ and have strayed from Him take heed to this gentle whisper and return to Him with wings on your feet. Don’t let Satan rob you of the fellowship you miss.
Let the whispers of Christ fill your heart and mind and you will know a more joyful existence. Let Him into your life and allow Christ to whisper to your heart about the love He has for you. What a better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to let your heart whispers be Christ’s whispers.
