How often do we complain more than rejoice? We complain about our jobs, our relatives, the bills we have to pay, or how we need new clothes. But have we thought about how blessed we really are? We’re fortunate to live in a country where we can worship God freely and without persecution. Let’s talk about our blessings rather than what we don’t have.

So you’re annoyed by your friend’s bad habits; well you’re blessed to have a good friend in your life. He/she may not do everything you want him/her to do, but if this friend sticks by you during hard times and he/she brings joy to your life through kind words, smiles, a card, or a phone call during the holidays, then you’re a blessed person. Don’t focus on the trivial things and thank God for your friend.

Or you and your sibling got into a bad argument over toys or who’s getting your parents’ attention the most. There are benefits to having siblings; you’ll have someone to talk to and play with in the house, you’ll learn the valuable lesson of service to others, and you’ll have a friend for life. Don’t poison your relationship over small stuff. Your family is the most important relationship you have next to God.

You may be envious of people who look more attractive than you, but remember that God made everyone different and He loves you just the way He loves them. Besides, doesn’t the Bible say that God looks at our hearts? Instead of trying to be a carbon copy of your peers, celebrate your uniqueness and know that you are blessed and loved by God. God is telling you, “Look at what I created!, he/she looks beautiful!”

Some of you may feel left out because you belong to a certain ethnic group. As an African American, I used to feel that way, especially when I thought about the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow era. But I’m blessed to be an African-American because it’s a tradition of strong faith in God, incredible achievements, and a strong family connection. We must learn to forgive those who hurt us unjustly and start loving others as Christ loved us.

We are truly blessed by God, even when times are the toughest. It’s a lot easier to complain about our problems but we often find it hard to stop and reflect on His blessings. Take time to thank Him for all the good things in your life, the list may be endless!
